If you are feeling financially pinched, you’re not alone. In fact, you’re not even in the minority. Recent research indicates that as many as 70% of Americans are feeling financially strained right now. What can you do about it? We’ve got some suggestions of creative ways to supplement your income by starting a side hustle.

  • Use your car to get ahead. Ride sharing is the obvious answer here, but there are other ways to use your car to make a little bit of extra cash. If you don’t want to drive people around or deliver food, consider renting out your car on a site like Turo or Getaround. They work just like Airbnb and put you in competition with car rental companies. There is, of course, some risk with something like this, but it can be extremely lucrative.
  • Make money doing something you’re already doing. Do you have a hobby that you could teach to someone else? You might be able to become a certified teacher to make money doing something you enjoy. If teaching is not your speed, there are plenty of other ways to leverage your leisure activities into money making gigs. Host a trivia night, bartend at your favorite bar, or become a mystery shopper. If you take great photos, sell them to stock photo platforms. Are you into music? Check out sites like PlaylistPush to learn more about being a curator and creating playlists.
  • Share your space for some extra income. Do you have a basement or spare room you could use as an Airbnb rental? How about a garage you can rent out for storage? Sites like Neighbor and Stow It let you list your extra storage space and get paid directly. Do you have a truck? Consider using it to haul junk or move furniture.
  • Sell something. List your old things on eBay, or launch an online store through Amazon. You can sell have products shipped directly to Amazon’s fulfillment center and sell them without ever having to deal with them directly. You can also sell your old clothes through consignment sites like Poshmark or ThredUp.
  • Do some sitting. Babysitting is a time-tested way to make money, but there’s also house sitting and pet sitting. You can help someone out and earn some good money doing it. You can offer these services on your own through neighborhood message boards, or register on a platform like Care, Rover, or House Sitters America.
